Thanks again for doing these recaps! As usual, I learned a lot of new info. I had no idea that Gideon was that evil in the source material. I don't think the movie had him cryogenically freeze his exes, that sounds sick!
Also, I have this take on the show: I think it's supposed to be a stealth time travel sequel to the movie. Like, the movie's events were canon in the Older Scott's timeline. There are a LOT of references specifically to the movie that support this, such as the film's cast reprising their roles and the fact that they actually make a movie based on Future Ramona's script. Do you think that this is what the series might be going for?
In my eyes, the anime is meant to be a sequel to both the comics AND the movie.
You can't really watch the anime first without having seen one of the previous adaptations. It's definitely meant to be a sequel series, it demands knowledge of the original story in order to understand the ways this new timeline deviates from it. But the anime incorporates elements from both the comics and the anime into its story, I've listed details it brings in from both throughout these recaps.
In the anime there is definitely an original timeline that follows a similar sequence of events to the comics/movie before Future Scott reaches back and alters it by kidnapping Scott. But the events we see play out in this *original* timeline, before Scott is kidnapped, don't match up exactly to either the comic or the movie. Scott talks about Sonic instead of Pac-Man, Ramona works for Netflix instead of Amazon, Crash and the Boys don't show up to the gig at the Rockit, the gig at the Rockit isn't part of the Battle of the Bands...the anime works as a sequel to either version of the story, but it definitely had its own timeline going even before Future Scott mucked about in it.
Thanks so much for following along with this series Mikhail, I've really enjoyed hearing your thoughts!
Welcome, Spencer! It's been a pleasure reading these, and you make some great points! But yeah, it is kinda a sequel but not to any specific iteration of the story.
Looking forward to more writing on the show from you, should you post any.
