I think a strong recurring theme throughout the show was about the unintended, often neglected, consequences of actions, especially concerning Steven and plant life XD. It also explores different parental approaches to raising a child and some outcomes, Vidalia and her two sons who are left to explore the world on their own, Connie and her parents pushing her and her strong sense of duty and responsibility and love of learning, Steven with the more communal approach, but it all seems to point back to love and support as essentials for human development.
